What you get
Set deep enough to survive the plow.
Most mailbox posts fail for one of two reasons: they weren't set deep enough, or the wood was never rated to sit in wet ground. Both are avoidable.
- Set below the frost line. Dug deep and backfilled properly so it doesn't heave out over a winter.
- Ground-contact rated wood. 4x4 or 6x6, and it doesn't rot off at the dirt line in three years.
- Carrier-legal height and setback. 41–45 in to the bottom of the box, set back off the curb so the truck can reach it.
- Old one hauled away. Including the broken post and the concrete on the bottom of it.
- Numbers that stay on. Applied or routed, not stickers that peel off by spring.
